kids club at the Wildlife habitat

Kids Club

The Wildlife Habitat successfully hosted its innaugural Kids Club during the Easter School holidays this year (2011). It was such a success, that we are pleased to include the Kids Club as a permanent part of our school holiday activity schedule.

Open to children aged between 4 and 12 years old (inclusive), the Kids Club provides close encounter experiences with Koalas, Crocodiles, Kangaroos, Cassowaries and various native birds. It is a fantastic learning and interactive adventure for all children who visit the Wildlife Habitat - Australia's Leading Wildlife Experience.

See, touch, smell, feed, have fun and enjoy nature up close and personal, it’s our kids club point of difference.

Designed specifically for primary school aged children, and at no extra cost, the Kids Club is free with entry to the Wildlife Park.

The next Kids Club at the Wildlife Habitat runs for 5 weeks over the Christmas School Holidays.

Due to animal behavioural issues, some animals may not be available for presentations on designated days. In these circumstances, other species may be used without notification.

Included in every Kids Club session is the opportunity for all children to:

    • Get up close to our fantastic local Wildlife
    • Touch and pat animals
    • Learn something new
    • Meet new friends from around your region
    • Explore the park with a Wildlife Keeper
    • Go behind the scenes and get a glimpse of what a Wildlife keeper does

Example of a Koala theme day:

  • Take part in a fun ice-breaker game to get to know your Wildlife Keeper and your new companions
  • Introduction to Koalas, pictures and an explanation what the word "koala" means (Aboriginal for "no water / no drink")
  • A comparison of koala paw vs their hand, draw around their hand and compare thumbs to koala example, also look at the koala's hind foot
  • Koala food- Take a walk behind the scene to our Gum Tree Plantation and look/smell/feel different gums, also look at gum in enclosures to see tips eaten (if old gum there) or the Koalas eating (if new gum there already)
  • Meet Barnsey the Koala near main koala enclosure, pat and feel his lovely soft fur
  • If time permits, enjoy a fun game to finish the afternoon

Other themes are similar, but there is always one activity, one outside observation and one or two "touching the animal" experiences

Through Observation...Appreciation
Through Appreciation... Conservation .

To enhance guests experience and learning, an educational and animal presentation area has been developed in The Wetlands.  Here visitors are given the opportunity for an intimate learning experience with
pythons, freshwater crocodiles and an array of friendly birds.

The Wildlife Habitat, Port Douglas offers a 4 Park Pass including Cairns Wildlife Dome in Cairns, and the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary and Rainforestation Nature Park in Kuranda.
where to find us
Highlights of our ecosystems

The Rainforest leads guests through a lush, tranquil environment where native species such as the endemic Boyd’s Forest Dragon, Eclectus Parrots and the endangered Southern Cassowary can be viewed in a natural setting. A meandering walkway allows the visitor to experience different levels of the rainforest and the varied microenvironments encapsulated within. At ground level displays of fish and amphibians are illuminated providing a glimpse of these cryptic creatures whilst high in the canopy exquisitely coloured pigeons and parrots perch amongst the foliage and fruits.

In the Wetlands an array of wading birds can be viewed foraging for fish and crustaceans in waterways that wind beneath boardwalks and beside pathways.
The Wetlands exhibit is considered unique, in that it allows a glimpse of a significant ecosystem to unfold.  This area depicts the amazing diversity of our natural wetlands that are important fringing areas and provide a link to many ecosystems. Here a host of macropods, fruit bats, black necked storks and a multitude of bird species can be found.

The Grasslands is an open-air exhibit that portrays both inland and coastal plains.  Here guests are enticed to interact with a range of macropods from the statuesque Eastern Grey Kangaroo to the petite Parma Wallaby.  The billabong is home to turtles, frogs and a range of waterfowl while also attracting a host of native bird varieties. Over forty species have been recorded utilising the exhibit as a refuge for breeding. Boardwalks overlook lagoons where both Estuarine and Freshwater crocodiles lurk beneath the murky waters or bask on the sunlit banks. A feature to this area is the Lumholtz’s Tree Kangaroo, a rare tree-climbing kangaroo found only in the rainforests of The Wet Tropics.
