Ever wondered what things go jump in the night? Wildlife Habitat’s new Nocturnal Habitat shows animals that come alive after dark.
Set under a starry night sky, enter a world of darkness and explore three unique nocturnal environments; Woodlands, Rainforest and Outback. Witness nocturnal critters in their recreated night environments and get up close to a range of animals that would be difficult to spot in the wild.
The Nocturnal Habitat has been an ambitious product for the park and was developed in a building that was once used as a residence!
The exhibit is integrated with advanced technology to replicate nature. Lighting devices communicate via WiFi to stimulate a reverse day-night cycle to change the animals’ sleep-cycle patterns.
When the animals experience their “day” during our night time, the lights will emit a UVA and UVB to replace the health benefits of natural light. During the “night” the animals will receive a manually adjusted hue of red, yellow and blue light to minimally impact their behaviours.
However, the new residents aren’t the only impressive thing about the Nocturnal Habitat. You can literally look up and spot the Southern Cross! This iconic constellation has been recreated using tiny fibre optic lights.

Meet some of the night critters that you can see in our Nocturnal Habitat.
Striped Possum
This little guy lives in North Queensland in eucalypt woodlands and rainforest between Townsville and the Cape York Peninsula.
Incredibly, it uses its long fourth finger to tap trees, checking if any critters are inside. It eats insect larvae within the tree wood, as well as sap honey and gum.
Feathertail Glider
At just 8cm, this sweet resident is the world’s smallest gliding mammal. Amazingly, it has a tail as long as the length of its head and body combined.
They are found in wet and dry eucalypt forests, parks and backyard gardens along the east coast of Australia.
Bush-stone Curlew
The Bush-stone Curlew is, quite literally, the birds that screams through the night!
This nocturnal bird can be found throughout all of Australia, predominately in woodland, forest and watercourse areas.
